Essential information for textiles with biocidal properties

The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, Regulation (EU) No 528/2012) is European legislation that regulates the placing on the market and use of biocidal products. Biocidal products are substances or mixtures intended to destroy, repel or render harmless harmful organisms by chemical or biological means.

Active substances must be authorised for a specific product type and use. They are listed on the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) website, available here.
For textiles, this mainly concerns TP 9 and TP 18 (TP = Type of Product).

  • Ensure you have evidence of the effectiveness of biocidal treatments
  • Find out more about care instructions to preserve the biocidal properties over time
  • Follow the labelling rules for your biocide-treated item

Labelling rules for textile products treated with biocides

The labelling must specify:

- Presence of biocidal products in the product

- Attributed biocidal property

- Names of active substances contained in the product

- Name of the biocidal nanomaterials present followed by (nano)

- Any relevant instructions on precautionary measures for use
